The Family Place Foundation was established in 2020 to improve the lives of adopted, fostered and kinship children and their families who have been impacted by trauma, providing therapeutic support tailored to help them heal, strengthen relationships and thrive.
This group of children are among the most likely to have experienced trauma in their early years and this can create lifelong challenges. Families tell us that they often feel isolated and misunderstood. They say that specialist support from practitioners who really understand what they are going through is scarce.
Our work is supported by specialist practitioners with training in developmental trauma. Practitioners come from a variety of backgrounds and include Clinical Psychologists, Educational Psychologists, Social Workers, Art, Music and Play Therapists, and Occupational Therapists.
We believe that every child deserves the best possible chance in life.
The Family Place Foundation focuses on projects in England and Wales which:
- bring families together
- support connection
- create memories
- build resilience
Over many years families have told us how hard it is to access particular kinds of help that are not covered by statutory funding. For example:
- supported, whole-family activities for when your child finds things hard
- opportunities for families to be together alongside support, so that everyone can genuinely relax
- support from staff with specialist training – being able to access someone who ‘really gets it’ and access views of different professionals
- innovative approaches that help to make the journey from care into a happy family smoother and more secure
We set up The Family Place Foundation specifically to expand the limited provision of services and support that is available for care-experienced children and their families. We want to provide innovative, creative support that families cannot access elsewhere. Most importantly, we want our work to be guided by our families. This includes maintaining a strong whole‑family ethos, prioritising opportunities that bring families together, and continually piloting new approaches shaped by the feedback and experiences of the families we support.
The Family Place Foundation and The Family Place Ltd.
The Family Place Foundation is an independent charity established to provide tailored therapeutic interventions for care-experienced children, their families and their support networks. The Foundation’s central aim is to raise funds via charitable grants and direct donations to provide ‘added extra’ specialist interventions that go beyond the provision of statutory services for very complex families who would not otherwise be able to access such support.
The Foundation works closely with The Family Place Ltd., an independent adoption support service. The Foundation commissions a range of providers, including The Family Place Ltd., to support and deliver its projects. Referrals for our services are made with the input and assistance of our service providers.
Our Participation Group and future plans
To ensure our work is family-focused, we have a Participation Group who provide input, feedback and suggestions on our projects and approaches. By empowering parents and carers to influence the direction of the charity, our Participation Group ensures that our work will be as helpful as possible to families. The input of our Participation Group through 2026-27 is crucial as we develop and implement our new Family Foundations project for early years support.
With access to highly-trained and experienced specialist practitioners, we explore innovative ideas and provide interventions which are exclusive to The Family Place Foundation. From our provision, we continue to evaluate and share our outcomes.
